Elections
Elections are all about choosing people that will do the best job of representing our important points of view and fundamental needs. People with disabilities have many of the same needs as other folks, but we also have our own interests. In the areas of health care, employment, transportation, and housing for example, people with disabilities often encounter greater challenges than might be experienced by non-disabled individuals. How will our elected officials recognize the needs and rights of people with disabilities, and help us to remove barriers?
As informed voters we have an obligation to understand election issues, particularly those issues that relate to the life experiences of people with disabilities. If we have access to various candidate surveys (i.e. candidate responses to important issues) we will be able to know in advance how each candidate plans to address issues we think are important. If you think of voters as "employers" (which we are!) looking to hire the best "employee" (i.e. elected official) candidate survey responses are a kind of "job interview" providing us with the information we need to "hire" (i.e. elect) the best candidate for the job.
