Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS) provides assistance and resources for people who are deaf or hard of hearing as they develop and implement their own independent living goals.
Participants can explore career options; educational services such as GED and basic adult courses and sign language classes; fellowship resources such as associations, churches, synagogues, clubs, or sport clubs; information on government services; referrals to various agencies such as Vocational Rehabilitation, mental health services, drug and alcohol treatment programs, and many other social service agencies; and information about assistive devices, or telecommunication devices for the Deaf.
The DHHS conducts outreach programs and assists local agencies and associations serving participants who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Communication Tips
- Do get the Deaf person's attention before you begin to speak, it is acceptable to tap a person lightly on the shoulder or arm or to wave a hand, small piece of paper, or cloth gently in the person's direction to attract his or her attention.
- Do make sure the Deaf person can clearly see your mouth and face. Don't eat, smoke, chew gum, or hold your hands in front of your mouth while you talk.
- Do speak and enunciate clearly and normally, but don't exaggerate your lip movements and use facial expressions and body language to clarify your message. Maintain eye contact throughout the conversation.
- Do use pencil and paper or visual aids as necessary.
- Disabled individuals often receive emotional support and new techniques.
- Learn self-advocacy skills.
- Do equip your business, office, etc, with assistive devices for the Deaf such as TTY, smoke alarm strobe light, flashers and TV with closed captions.
