Youth and Family
For more than 37 years, Paraquad has helped empower people with all types of disabilities to live with self-determination through choice and opportunity. Our guiding principle is the independent living philosophy—the belief that people with disabilities should integrate fully into society, have equal opportunities and maintain control of their lives.
The Youth and Family Program combines youth development principles with the spirit of the independent living philosophy to address the unique challenges facing children and youth with disabilities. Engaging youth in safe and nurturing activities are key components of positive youth development.
Our program provides youth a supportive environment to foster social relationships, develop knowledge and life skills, promote community involvement and enhance youth's ability to live independently.

Youth Group
The Youth Group focuses on social and recreational activities that promote the development of social skills not acquired in segregated environments. Participants include young people with and without disabilities. Non-disabled youth develop an awareness and understanding of their disabled peers and learn to work and play side-by-side with people with disabilities, while youth with disabilities learn to participate within the community as an equal. Paraquad's Youth Group targets youth between the ages of 13-21 and their families. The Youth Group meets once a month for group discussions and community outings.
Youth Advisory Board
The Youth Advisory Board meets once a month to plan Youth Group activities, address issues facing youth with disabilities and coordinate advocacy plans. Similar to the Youth Group, participants engage in social activities on a monthly basis. The Youth Advisory Board, however also incorporates leadership skill development into monthly discussions. Members of the Youth Advisory Board show a commitment and understanding of the Disability Rights Movement, Independent Living Philosophy and advocacy.
Education Advocacy
Education Advocacy services are open to children and youth from birth to 21 years old. Staff members work with youth and their families on IEP (Individual Education Plans) or other education advocacy issues. For example, a staff member recently visited school district officials with a young participant and his family to support their requests for accommodations for his disability.
General Independent Living Services
Individual independent living services are open to youth ages 13 to 21. Staff members and youth work together to reach an individualized goal focused on independent living. Goals could include community transition, graduating high school, or accessing transportation.
Family Participation Program
Provides assistance for parents with physical disabilities and their families through a support group and access to resources.
