Overview of Programs

Paraquad, one of the oldest Centers for Independent Living in the country, was founded in 1970 with a mission to empower people with disabilities to increase their independence through choice and opportunity. Today, that idea has blossomed into 22 diverse service areas, addressing the ever changing needs of individuals with all types of disabilities. Our Independent Living Program encourages people with many types of disabilities to create a plan for increased independence. We provide a professional assessment of needs and options, and offer skills training. Our Housing Program works with individuals to modify their homes for greater accessibility. Our Employment Program connects qualified individuals with employers. Our Youth and Family Program works with youth with disabilities to develop independent living skills that will help them to overcome barriers and succeed as adults in society.

In addition to directly serving individuals with disabilities, Paraquad serves many others through our partnerships with local businesses, community agencies and educational institutions. We consult with area businesses in their efforts to accommodate employees and customers with disabilities. We provide deaf interpreting services for community meetings. We advise builders about the need for incorporating universal design principles into facilities from housing to baseball stadiums. We make disability awareness presentations to school groups. In all these ways-and more-Paraquad improves the quality of life for the whole community.
