Celebrating Year One of the Affordable Care Act

Posted on March 23, 2011 by Megan Burke

There is much to celebrate as we celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, signed into law March 3, 2010 by President Barack Obama.

Approximately 900,000 Missourians with disabilities will have greater choice and control over their health and will no longer be denied insurance or pay excessive premiums. At Paraquad, the vast majority of participants in our programs have very low incomes so assistance with medical costs in extremely important.

People with disabilities will receive a 50% discount on medications when they use the “donut hole” provision in Medicare Part D in 2011. Last year, people using Medicare Part D received a $250 rebate to help with medication costs. Another benefit of the ACA is that children can no longer be denied the insurance they need to develop into healthy adults.

Everyone will have better consumer protections, no lifetime benefit limits that reduce quality of care, and no co-pays and deductibles for preventive medical care. The Affordable Care Act has and will continue to create a more affordable and accessible health system for everyone.
