Accessbile Taxis Hit the St. Louis Streets
Posted on August 10, 2011 by Kim Barge
Paraquad is excited to announce that wheelchair accessible taxi service is now available in the St. Louis area. Airport Best Taxi Services, LLC, in collaboration with Paraquad, has added four accessible vehicles to its taxi fleet and is providing regular taxi service for people with disabilities. The rates and hours of operation will be the same as all other taxis.
In 2009, Paraquad received a New Freedom grant from the Federal Transit Administration for an accessible taxi project. Currently, the Americans with Disabilities Act does not require taxi companies to have wheelchair accessible vehicles in their taxi fleet. The Federal New Freedom grant is designed to fund projects that go above and beyond the Americans with Disabilities Act. Paraquad seized this funding opportunity to fill an unmet need in St. Louis.
Many individuals and organizations have contributed to this project including the St. Louis Metropolitan Taxi Commission, St. Louis City Office on the Disabled, and Washington University. With the support of these groups, Paraquad and Airport Best Taxi Service are looking forward to providing individuals with disabilities the opportunity to be more independent.
Paraquad is glad that St. Louis has joined cities like, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. in providing the disability community additional options for accessible transportation. Accessible transportation is vital for people with disabilities to live independently in their own communities.
